Dentist and Team Leader

Dr. Christopher J. Ciriello is a skilled and experienced dental practitioner who is passionate about providing his patients with the utmost care and comfort. Dr. Ciriello is also committed to building the best professional dental team you’ll find in the Kootenays.

His path to excellence in dentistry began when Dr. Ciriello graduated in the top 1 percent of his class in the Bachelor of Medical Sciences program at Western University in London, Ontario. In 2007 he graduated from the Western University School of Dentistry with numerous awards, and then mentored with one of the North America’s top lecturers in orthodontics and TMJ disorders. After more than 500 hours of continuing education Dr. Ciriello joined the North American lecture circuit, where he discovered his passion in mentoring high-performing dentists to serve in our small communities.

Further seeing the need for dentists in even the most remote places of the globe, Dr. Ciriello has done dental outreach work in Northern Canada and various developing countries around the world, including remote areas like the jungles of central Jamaica.

A lover of the active, outdoor lifestyle, Dr. Ciriello discovered all the Kootenays have to offer. In 2014 Dr. Ciriello made the move to Castlegar, where he transitioned Dr. Ellis’ family practice into Kootenay Family Dental – a leading-edge dental clinic with an uncompromising approach to customer care. Shana Johnstone

Office Manager

Originally from Alberta, Shana moved to Castlegar 13 years ago and has been making clients feel welcome at the Kootenay Family Dental office for the past three years. A certified dental assistant since 2008 with previous experience as a customer service manager, Shana brings a significant skill set, as well as her bright smile and advanced dental knowledge to the front desk at Kootenay Family Dental. Along with her work keeping the day-to-day operations running smoothly, Shana is constantly upgrading her knowledge in an effort to better serve the clients she has grown to love like family.

Dental Hygienist

A native of Castlegar, Daniel travelled to far-flung places like Denmark and England before returning home to work in his profession and enjoy the incredible surroundings of the place he grew up. Daniel helped out in various dental offices, both in Vancouver and the Kootenays before going to Selkirk College and later to dental hygiene school. After graduating in 2012, he came to work as a hygienist at Kootenay Family Dental – where he enjoys helping patients and working with the team. He believes strongly in empowering his patients through education and encouraging proper home care.

Dental Assistant

Known around the office and loved by her patients for her kind, gentle nature, Kim is a native of Castlegar who loves working at Kootenay Family Dental — in the community where her heart is. A certified dental assistant, with previous chairside experience assisting an endodontist in Edmonton, Kim has a keen interest in preventative dentistry, which she imparts to her patients every day. It was her desire to learn the latest advancements in dentistry care and technology that first drew Kim to work at Kootenay Family Dental. She also loves interacting with so many different people, and working side-by-side with dentists to provide top-quality patient care. Outside the office, she can be regularly found adventuring in the outdoors with her dogs.

Dental Hygienist

After moving to the Kootenays in 2013 from the Lower Mainland, Christine worked as a temp at Kootenay Family Dental until she was offered an opportunity to become a full-time member of the team. An Ontario native who has worked in the dental field since 1989 and has a Bachelor of Science degree in dental hygiene, Christine jumped at the chance to work with a great group of people who are dedicated to providing optimal patient care. So it’s no surprise she enjoys most every aspect of her job, particularly working in collaboration with her team ー the patients, staff and other dental professionals at Kootenay Family Dental. Originally from a small town in Ontario, Christine was drawn to the Kootenays by the region’s breathtaking beauty and synergistic community life.

Dental Hygienist

A Castlegar resident since birth, Sandra’s career the field of dentistry began early, when she started working in a dental clinic as a teenager. She enjoyed the work so much that upon graduation from high school, she studied to become a certified dental assistant (CDA). After working as a CDA for two years, Sandra decided she wanted to further her knowledge of dentistry – so she went on to become a registered dental hygienist.  She loves working at Kootenay Family Dental, and the part of her job she likes best is working with patients to help them achieve better oral health. Sandra also loves life in Castlegar, surrounded by her friends and family – as well as the incredible mountains, lakes and outdoor activities the area has to offer.

Lori Tennant


Lori moved from her hometown of Nakusp to Castlegar to work at Kootenay Family Dental. With a background in restaurant management and a diploma in business administration and accounting under her belt, Lori helps keep the front desk operating smoothly and smiles on the faces of patients every day. When she’s not enjoying the continuous learning opportunities, friendly customers and supportive staff at her workplace, she’s out enjoying the great Kootenay vibes found in the outdoors and communities of the region.
